Blinded by the light case study

FUNDING AND INDUSTRY

1) The budget for 'Blinded By The Light' was $15 million US dollars. Bend It Films, Levantine Films and Ingenious Media all contributed towards the production budget of Blinded By The Light.

2) Bend It Networks has been involved with other films and projects such as: 'Bend It Like Beckham', 'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging', 'Bride & Prejudice', 'Viceroy's House' 'It's A Wonderful Afterlife' and many more

3) New Line Cinema was established in 1967 by Robert Shaye, as a film distribution company, supplying foreign and art films for college campuses in the United States. Shaye operated New Line's offices out of his apartment at 14th Street and Second Avenue in New York City. New Line Cinema is now owned by Warner Bros Pictures Group

4) Gurinder Chadha managed to get the film made by speaking to Springsteen and his management company, in order to agree on the film's production and by using Springsteen's music in the film

5) The overall success was what mainly attracted Chadha to the project since her other worldwide hit 'Bend It Like Beckham' became a 'smash-hit' in 2002 and made over $100m at the worldwide box office, so that's what mainly inspired her to this film-making project

PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION

1) New Line Cinema won the distribution rights and they won it for $15 million USD

2) Warner Bros, Fox Searchlight and Lionsgate and others were rumoured to have been bidding for the distribution rights

3) Some of the allures of 'Blinded by the Light' had to do with the surprisingly universal appeal of Springsteen’s coming-of-age tunes, which tell honest stories about a hardscrabble upbringing, ambition and the fight to break free of all shackles to do something worthwhile with one’s life.

4) Springsteen didn't take part in the production and promotion of the film as he 'didn't take part in the Park City's premiere as to have been rumoured. Chadha told the crowd that the Boss didn’t want to overshadow the proceedings and take the focus away from the film.

5) eOne Entertainment claim to offer that eOne enables and creates world class content'. eOne enables every step in the entertainment value chain from development and production to marketing and distribution. With the reach of a studio and the flexibility of an indie, we share bold stories with audiences around the world

PROMOTION AND RECEPTION

1) The genre suggests how it is typically a musical comedy-drama type of film and the potential audience pleasures it brings to the audience, suggests the stereotypical and the cultural clashes this film includes with multiple views on society and the struggles within an Asian Muslim household

2) The posters for BBTL featured the protagonist and it also included things like the director (Gurinder Chadha), the release date, musician (Bruce Springsteen) and texts such as "You won't stop smiling", "The feel-good movie of the year", "A must-see beacon of joy" and many more. They appeared at places such as billboards, box offices and many more, in order to preview the film and give it popularity so it became a world-wide hit

3) Dave's Cave, Fandango All Access, Variety, HeyUGuys, Bend It Networks, The Upcoming and Screen Rant Plus are all examples of interviews that the cast of BBTL had with them

4) Interviews with newspapers, TV shows and websites are a good way to promote a new film release because it helps the film to gain popularity and attract attention. It also helps bigger media conglomerates and companies offer their support to promote and publicise new films in order for them to do well and become successful

5) The BBTL Twitter account helps to create and maintain interest in the film as many people are aware of Twitter and use it, so it will heavily influence social media users to find out about this film and help it become popular and well-known, especially in the film industry

6) The BBTL Facebook page uses images and video content to promote the film by previewing snippets of the film, in order to attract people to watch it and also make it seem interesting by showing different scenes from the film, so the audience can somehow gain an insight into what the film is about

7) The BBTL Facebook page contains posts supporting the BLM Movement in order to show their respects and appreciation. Bryan Stevenson is an individual who posted a post on Facebook after the brutality of George Floyd, and he wanted to address the prejudices and inequality that should not be a thing in society, and instead, everyone be treated fairly and equally

8) In total, BBTL made $18,144,644 million USD. I think it was largely unsuccessful because it didn't gain much popularity or interest as her other films, such as Bend It Like Beckham, hence it didn't make much at the box office.
