BBFC and Film Regulation

 Film Regulation & The BBFC:

1) The BBFC is the British board of film classification and the institution is responsible for regulating films. It links to the government as they can help society from acting in an immoral way by not allowing underage people to see things that could be harmful to them.

2) Films that get released in cinemas will get classified as they could have controversial or extreme content so the films need to have a variety of different opinions. The compliance officers will watch the films in order to see what type of effect the movie will have on the audience, when watched they would note the; narrative, characters and the outline of individual scenes. They will also note the key moments and the different shots, angles, bad language, sex, violence and drug references and by the following they will base the age rating.

3) The Dark Knight generated a large media coverage regarding its certificate since "The 12A rating resulted in much press coverage and complaints from members of the public, who thought the violence was too strong to be contained at that category". I personally disagree with the 12A rating of the film as I feel like it contains a lot of violence which may be unsuitable for young children, even if they are supervised by an adult, it still may have an negative effect on their minds and could affect them psychologically in some way.

4) The guidelines for a 12A certificate is that "Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema, unless accompanied by an adult". For BBTL, the guidelines were suitable because it didn't contain much graphic/inappropriate scenes, hence it was given a 12A rating for film release. However, I don't really think children 12 and over would've enjoyed the film and instead, find it boring.

5) Blinded By The Light was given a 12A rating because it contains "racist language and behaviour and moderate bad language". It didn't contain anything too extreme that's why the rating isn't 15 or 18, so it best suits 12A, although it still contains bad language.
