Film & TV Language: Lighting Task

 LIGHTING

In this image, there is high-key lighting.  The lighting deliberately highlights the cigarette smoke. The directors has done this to show how she is subverting social norms as smoking was frowned upon.  The dark lighting also indicates that she is a femme fatale . Perhaps she is the antagonist. From this image, i can infer she plays a major role in the narrative. However, there is also an eerie atmosphere created around her. For instance, her droopy eyes seem to have an artificial sense to them. This activates the enigma code.
             

The lighting that is used in this image is high-key.  This creates a feeling that this protagonist doesn't have anything to hide. There angle used is top lighting which creates a shadow around his eyes. this perhaps illustrates a narrative that he is an authoritarian figure with a lot of power. In this image, there is a use of low-key lighting. The lack of filler lights creates a dark and ominous atmosphere. The use of the top lighting makes it seem as if he's standing underneath a street light. The top lighting also highlights the gun in his hand. This is an enigma code. Perhaps it is emphasising that he is in control. I think this image is from an action neo-noir film as the lighting is dramatic. In this image, there is a use of low-key lighting. This creates a sense of mystery and paranoia (enigma code). The light shining perhaps indicates that the genre of the film is horror/ thriller. The light also highlights the object in his hand which appears to be a knife. This creates a narrative of someone breaking and entering a household. The man is the antagonist in this. The dark setting could also emphasise the fact that it is night and the family is asleep. This instils a  sense of panic and nervousness in the viewer.

In this image there is a use of high-key lighting and also low-key lighting. There is  back lighting being used from behind the male character which potentially highlights his superiority and the internalised belief  that men are dominant. The stern expression on the man's face indicates that he does not want to be with the woman. The woman's face is barely in the picture. Perhaps this indicates that she is treated like a commodity rather than a person.
